International Day of the Midwife

Good morning, world!

Today has been designated as the International Day of the Midwife!

Midwives were discredited and systematically eliminated as male physicians sought to take over birth throughout the late 1800’s and into the 1900’s. This extermination had a great deal to do with racism, as generations of black “granny midwives” posed a “threat” to the power and influence that obstetricians craved.

Decades later, and thanks to a combination of world events - social awakening, the pandemic crisis and consumer demand for better evidence-backed maternity care, we ARE demanding that midwives be brought back to a place of importance. Midwives provide inclusive and respectful care and are the “first line of defense” for expecting mothers in all countries with better maternal care statistics than the US.

Midwives of excellence work very hard to learn and grow in our craft. We deserve to be esteemed and appreciated as professionals who work in conjunction with doctors, nurses, doulas and all other related birth care providers.

How can you support your local network of midwives???
