Breastfeeding a preemie

Most of us don’t plan to have our babies before the 37th week of pregnancy, but it can happen. It can be shocking and scary. We probably don’t feel ready, physically or emotionally. Our sweet new little one may face health challenges - and we can’t know for certain what the outcome might be.

If you have been planning to breastfeed, know that your baby needs your milk more than ever! There is tremendous support for help in navigating the “learned art of breastfeeding” sooner than expected. Your hospital/NICU will likely be well-prepared to assist you in initiating lactation, pumping and getting baby to the breast asap.
